Where are grease fittings used?
A zerk grease fitting (also known as a grease fitting or grease nipple) patented by Oscar Zerk in 1929 is used in mechanical systems to feed lubricants like lubricating grease into a bearing using a grease gun. It was introduced as an improved method of lubricating moving parts.
How many grease fittings are there?
There are two grease fittings that are very common. These are the 1/4″-28 thread and the 1/8″ NPT thread. However, there are other less common grease fitting threads in use. Here are some ways to identify the threads on your grease fittings.
What year did they stop putting grease fittings on cars?
In the 1980s, many auto makers eliminated greasing points because they believed that the quality of grease had so improved it would last the life of the car.
How often should you grease your car?
Over the last 50 or so years, the rules have changed with the advances in motor engines and with synthetic oils that are of higher quality. Many suggest that 5,000 to 10,000 miles (or more, depending on your vehicle) should be the new standard in oil changes.
How much grease do you put in a Zerk fitting?
Use Just Enough: Don’t overfill when you grease Zerk fittings. Usually, three or four pumps of grease are enough and over-greasing a joint pushes grease out the aforementioned seals, which attracts dust, sand, and dirt. Contaminated grease can damage moving parts, so avoid having excess squish out the seals.
What are the types of grease fittings?
There are three major thread types for grease fittings: metric, taper or parallel, and unified. M5, M6, M7, M8, and M10 are common metric threads. British standard pipe (BSP), pipe thread fine (PTF), and national pipe thread fine (NPTF) fittings use tapered or parallel threads.
Are there different sizes of grease Zerks?
There is effectively just one size. There are some other weird ones out there, the common being button head I believe, but if it looks like a standard grease zerk it is going to be the standard size.
Why does my grease gun get stuck in the fitting?
Grease guns get stuck on fittings due to clogged zerk fittings which don’t let the grease pass through and cause a pressure build up that prevents them from releasing. So to get it unstuck unscrews the hose or hardline from the gun which will release the pressure and allow it to come off.
How often should you lubricate your car?
The more mileage a car has, the more frequently you need to change the oil. A new car with low mileage may only require an oil change every 7,500 miles, whereas a car from the early 2000s topping 150,000 miles will definitely require oil changes every 3,000 miles, if not more.
How often should you grease your front end?
I grease the front end every oil change – about 7K/mile intervals – which is about twice yearly.
